Overview
Founded at Grenchen in 1888 by Adolf and Alfred Kurth as Kurth Frères; the Certina name was adopted in 1938 and became the company's. Part of the Swatch Group since 1983. Its defining contribution is the DS (Double Security) concept of 1959 — a shock-mounted movement, reinforced case, thickened crystal and multiple gaskets — whose governing patent, number 346825, was registered on 8 May 1958 by the case manufacturer Huguenin Frères.
