Overview
Founded in Paris in 1837 as a saddlery, and a leather house before anything else — which is why its watch straps are made to a standard the watch industry does not generally attempt. Its watchmaking is not a licensing arrangement: Hermès holds a 25 per cent stake in Vaucher Manufacture Fleurier, which builds its H1837 and ultra-thin H1950 calibers, and runs its own watch operation at Bienne. The founding year given here is the house's; the watch business is far younger.
