Overview
Founded in 1997 by the watchmaker Felix Baumgartner and the designer Martin Frei; the name joins Ur, the Mesopotamian city where early timekeeping practice is recorded, with the German Werk. Urwerk builds the wandering-hours satellite complication — hour numerals riding on satellites mounted to a rotating carousel, each tracking a minute scale before indexing away. The principle is old, having been used in seventeenth-century night clocks, and Urwerk's contribution is to have made it a modern mechanically sophisticated wristwatch complication.
