Seamaster Diver 300M wave dial

Probable

The dial that defines the model: a wave pattern across the whole face, introduced on the 1993 Diver 300M and carried, in changing forms, to the present. It is the most useful single component on the watch for an examiner, because the pattern is difficult to reproduce well and easy to inspect. Two generations behave differently under magnification. The earlier dials carry the waves as a printed or stamped pattern beneath the lacquer; from 2018 the pattern is laser-engraved into a ceramic dial, which gives a sharper edge and a different depth of reflection. Mistaking one generation's finish for a defect in the other is the common error.

Applied Omega logo at 12 and applied indices, each seated flush with no adhesive visible at the base under 10x. Printing at the dial foot is crisp with no bleed into the lacquer. On post-2018 ceramic dials the wave pattern has a cut edge rather than a printed one.

Was the change from a printed wave dial to a laser-engraved ceramic dial a clean cutover at the 2018 reference change, or did the two overlap in production or in service supply?

Scope The fitment records treat the change as aligning with the reference change, which is how it is catalogued rather than how it is proven. Service supply in particular is likely to have blurred it, and a ceramic dial in an earlier watch is currently classified as a service replacement on that reasoning rather than on evidence.
