Sandwich dial

Panerai's signature dial construction: an upper plate pierced with the numerals and markers, a luminous layer beneath it, and a lower plate carrying that layer. The lume is therefore BELOW the dial surface and is seen through the cut-outs, rather than being applied on top of the dial as it is on almost every other watch. Under raking light the difference is unmistakable — the numerals are recessed, with a visible plate thickness at their edges.

Scope Consequential in the direction that harms a genuine watch. The sandwich dial is the fastest counterfeit check on the brand, and an examiner who does not know that some references legitimately lack one could report a correct painted dial as a fake.
