Plain screw-down Oyster caseback

With very few exceptions, a Rolex Oyster caseback is plain on the outside: no engraving, no logo, no model name, no display window. The reference and case-maker marks are on the INSIDE. This is one of the most useful facts in Rolex authentication precisely because it is a negative — there is almost nothing there to get wrong, so anything present is a question.

    A long-standing counterfeit signature. Genuine Oyster backs of the modern era do not carry decorative exterior engraving, and text of this kind is a strong indicator against the caseback. It is an indicator against the CASEBACK: casebacks are separable, so establish what else on the watch agrees with it.

    Correct on almost no Rolex. A sapphire display back on a reference catalogued with a solid one is either an aftermarket modification or a counterfeit case, and the two are distinguished by the quality of the work rather than by the presence of the window.
