The Amphibia's water resistance comes from a design that uses pressure rather than resisting it. A thick domed acrylic crystal sits in a compression ring; as external pressure rises the crystal deforms slightly and presses harder into its seat, so the seal tightens with depth instead of failing. The caseback gasket works on the same principle. It is a genuinely unorthodox piece of engineering, arrived at because the factory could not manufacture to the tolerances a conventional 200m case needs.
