The most technically radical movement in this expansion and the one with the most conspicuous observable signature. At 40 Hz it oscillates roughly ten times faster than a standard 4 Hz mechanical watch, which makes the seconds hand appear to glide rather than step — a behaviour no conventional mechanical movement can produce and one visible across a room. Recorded in vibrations per hour (288,000) for comparability with the rest of the catalog.

Architecture

The FC-710 automatic with its regulating organ replaced entirely: a single monocrystalline silicon component oscillating at 40 Hz stands in for the balance wheel, hairspring and their associated parts — 26 components reduced to one, with no lever escapement in the conventional sense.

A near-gliding seconds hand is the signature, and it is unmistakable
40 Hz against the usual 4 Hz means roughly eighty beats per second. The seconds hand does not appear to step at all. No conventional mechanical movement can imitate this, and a substituted one would revert to a visible 6-to-8-step-per-second advance. It also runs the opposite way to the Powermatic 80 check recorded elsewhere in this catalog — there a SLOW beat is correct, here an extraordinarily fast one is — which is why the reference must be established before the beat is interpreted.

Service practice

The monolithic oscillator is a single silicon part: it is replaced rather than adjusted or repaired, and there is no regulation in the conventional sense. Servicing runs through Frederique Constant.
