The winding crown is set with a faceted synthetic spinel (blue) or, on gold pieces, a sapphire cabochon. Plastic 'gem' or a plain crown is incorrect.

Secret signature in a Roman numeral
Cartier hides a micro-engraved 'Cartier' signature within one of the Roman numerals (commonly the VII or the X). A missing or crude signature is a strong counterfeit indicator.
