Case

LowProbable

Gold-filled wear on curved cases concentrates on the long flanks

The curve means the case rides against the wrist along its edges, and honest wear shows as base metal along the flanks and at the caseback rim. Uniform brightness across a curved gold-filled case, with no wear at those points, indicates re-plating.

Date the movement first, then judge the dial against that date

The Boulton ran long enough that dial and hand configurations correct at the start of production are wrong at the end. The movement serial number gives an approximate production year through the published Hamilton serial lists; only once that is established can the dial be assessed. Judging the dial first and inferring the date from it reasons in a circle.
