A limited edition makes checkable claims — check them
A numbered edition states how many were made and which one this is. Both are verifiable against the manufacturer's own announcement of the edition, and a number outside the stated size is conclusive. Licensed editions carry a further check: the licensor's artwork and marks are executed under contract to specific standards, and an unlicensed copy tends to reproduce them from press images.

Edition documentation is part of the object, not an accessory
For a numbered edition, the certificate and its number are part of what is being sold, and their absence materially changes what the watch is worth. That makes documentation worth examining as carefully as the watch — matching numbers between certificate, caseback and any presentation packaging, and consistency of printing and paper with the manufacturer's other documentation of the period.
