A sculptural case is expensive to copy and cheap to compare

Each Horological Machine is a specific three-dimensional geometry produced in very small numbers. The economics that make counterfeiting a Rolex worthwhile do not apply, and the copies that exist are generally loose homages rather than exact reproductions. Compare the geometry against published images from several angles; the difficulty of the form is doing the work.

Attribution of the constructor is part of the public record

MB&F names the collaborators who build each machine's movement. That is unusual, it is published, and it means a claim about who made a given movement can be checked against the manufacturer's own account rather than inferred. Where a machine's stated construction does not match the published attribution, that is a documentary finding.
