The service

How it works

What happens to a watch you send us, what you get back, and what that document does and does not say. Where we have not settled something yet, this page says so rather than guessing.

What we examine

We consider mechanical and quartz wristwatches case by case, rather than publishing a list of accepted makers. A brand appearing in our Knowledge Center means we have documented it; it is not a promise that we will take the watch, and its absence is not a refusal. These are out of scope:

  • Smartwatches and fitness trackers.
  • Clocks, pocket watches and movements not in a wristwatch case.
  • Jewellery, cases and bracelets with no movement to examine.
  • Valuations and appraisals. We examine what a watch is, not what it is worth.

How a watch reaches us

Not yet. Atlas & Crown is in a private launch and accounts are by invitation, so we are not taking watches from the public. We have not settled how intake will work — in person, by appointment, or by insured shipping — and we would rather say that than describe a process you cannot use. Register your interest below and we will write to you when it opens.

What it costs

Quoted per watch, in writing, before any work begins. We do not publish a price list: what an examination involves depends on the watch, its documentation and what you need answered. You will never receive an invoice for work you did not agree to.

How long it takes

Confirmed when we accept a request. We are not publishing a turnaround we cannot yet stand behind — an examination is finished when the examiner can answer the question, and a target that pushes that is a target working against you.

What you receive

A written examination report setting out what was examined, what was found and what could not be established; and, where the conclusion supports one, a certificate with a public record anyone can check without an account. Both are issued as files pinned to their exact contents, so what you hold can be shown to be what we issued.

What a certificate is, and is not

It records what a named examiner found on a stated date, on the evidence available to them. It is not a guarantee of legal title, not insurance, not a valuation, and not a statement that a watch will pass any other examiner's opinion. Atlas & Crown is not a manufacturer and is not affiliated with the makers whose watches it examines.

Your watch and your privacy

Serial numbers are encrypted and never shown in full on a public page; photographs and documents you send stay private to your account and the staff examining the watch. A public record shows the watch, not you. Read the privacy notice
