Enamel condition is the primary evidence, and perfect enamel is suspect

Ninety-year-old fired enamel on a worn watch normally shows chips at the numeral edges and at the case corners. Modern re-enamelling and epoxy fills present as a uniform, slightly soft black that sits proud of the metal and does not chip. Re-enamelling is a legitimate restoration; it is a finding about originality that has to be recorded, and on this model it is the single most common one.

Because a genuine 14k case is the expensive part, reproduction cases exist and are fitted with genuine period Hamilton movements. Check the case hallmarks and the case-maker's marks inside the back against period practice, and check the fit of the movement in the case: period cases were made for the specific movement and a modern case is usually a shade generous.
