The helium escape valve is the reference's defining feature and is a real fitting in the case wall, not a marking. It exists to vent helium that has permeated the case during saturation decompression, which is a problem confined to commercial saturation diving — the valve is genuinely useless to a recreational diver, and its presence on a watch is therefore about lineage rather than function.
