The turtle asserts a construction and should agree with the watch

The turtle is not a brand logo applied for decoration; it marks a watch as built to the DS specification. So it makes a claim that the rest of the watch can either support or contradict — the movement should sit in a shock-absorbing mount, the crystal should be noticeably thick, and the case should be gasketed accordingly. A turtle on a watch with none of that indicates a replaced caseback or a watch assembled from parts. Note the date boundary: a genuine DS watch made before the end of 1960 may correctly have no turtle at all.

Crystal thickness is part of the specification and is measurable

The DS crystal is deliberately thick, and thickness is one of the few specification claims an examiner can check with a gauge rather than by comparison. A DS-marked watch fitted with an ordinary thin crystal has been re-crystalled with a generic part — a common and understandable repair, and a real loss of the specification the turtle claims.

Redials are the characteristic vintage Certina defect

As across the Priority 1 group, values sit in the range where refinishing pays and counterfeiting does not. Look for printing that sits on the surface, a minute track short of the edge, and Certina lettering with modern proportions. A restoration finding.
