Examine the strap before the watch
Hermès leather is the company's oldest and best competence, and it is the hardest part of the package to counterfeit convincingly. Look at the stitch pitch and its regularity, the edge paint or edge finishing, the way the leather takes a fold, the smell, and the stamped markings on the underside. A strap that is stiff, plasticky, unevenly stitched or roughly edge-finished is a finding, and on this brand it is a strong one.
Case
The lug asymmetry is specific and it is where copies fail
The Arceau's lugs are deliberately unequal: the pair at twelve differs in length and profile from the pair at six, and the whole arrangement is drawn from a stirrup. Counterfeits reproduce the idea of asymmetry without the proportion, and the error shows most clearly in how the lugs meet the case band and in the relationship between lug length and case diameter. Measure rather than eyeball, and compare against the published case dimensions.
Dial
The italic numerals lean, and their lean has a direction and an angle
The sloping numerals are the model's second signature. On genuine dials the lean is consistent around the dial and coordinates with the lug geometry; on copies the numerals are frequently upright at some positions and leaning at others, or the lean is applied uniformly without the rotational logic of the original. Read the numerals as a set, not individually.
Movement
H1837 is a Vaucher manufacture caliber and should look like one
Where the reference has a display back, expect a properly finished Swiss manufacture movement with a double barrel, a Hermès-signed rotor and 28,800 vph. This is not a decorated generic ébauche and it does not resemble one. A watch presented as an H1837 Arceau showing a plain ETA-family movement, or a quartz module, is not what it claims.
