The complication is the authentication, and it is testable — slowly but completely. A perpetual calendar must handle a 30-day month end correctly, moving from the 30th to the 1st without passing through a 31st, and must know which years are leap years. An annual calendar cannot do the first; a simple calendar cannot do either.
