Check the model against the documented list of factory Spaceviews

Bulova produced Spaceviews as specific catalogued models, and the collector community — principally through the Bulova collector databases built from period catalogues — maintains lists of which models were factory Spaceviews. A watch whose case and model do not appear on those lists, but which has no dial, was very probably converted. This is the practical test, and it is a documentary one rather than a physical one.

The chapter ring is printed on the crystal, and reproductions exist

On a Spaceview the hour markers are printed on the underside of the crystal rather than on a dial, because there is no dial. Reproduction Spaceview crystals are readily available — they are what a conversion needs — so the crystal is not evidence of anything on its own. Its condition can still be informative: period crystals show age, and a pristine modern crystal on an otherwise worn 1960s watch is consistent with a recent conversion.

Conversions are the dominant issue and they are not counterfeits

A very large proportion of watches sold as Spaceviews are converted standard 214s: the dial has been taken out and a Spaceview crystal fitted. Every component is genuine Bulova, the movement is correct, and the watch runs exactly as it should. What is wrong is the description. Classify this as MODIFIED — an authentic watch in a configuration the factory did not sell it in — and not as a counterfeit. The distinction matters commercially, because a factory Spaceview is worth substantially more than a conversion, and it matters ethically, because calling a genuine watch fake is its own kind of error.
