MB&F's winding weight is shaped as a double-headed axe and is among the more recognisable rotors in modern watchmaking. On the automatic Legacy Machines it is visible through the display back and is a straightforward comparison against published images.

Certina used bought-in chronograph calibers of the period, and the catalog does not assert which one belongs in a given Chronolympic. An examiner should establish the caliber physically and treat any claimed assignment they are given as unverified until it is checked — this is a gap in the record, not a fact about the watch.

Chanel · J12 · Ref. J12 Calibre 12.1

Through the display back, expect a properly finished Swiss manufacture automatic with a Chanel-signed rotor, running at 28,800 vph with COSC certification. Because Calibre 12.1 derives from Tudor's MT5600 family, its architecture is well documented and comparable against a known relative. A generic movement, or a quartz module, behind a Calibre 12.1 dial is conclusive.

There is no dial hiding the mechanism: the carousel, the satellites and their gearing are the visible face of the watch. That makes a substituted movement effectively impossible to conceal, and reduces the visual check to comparing the exposed architecture against published images of the reference.

H. Moser & Cie. · Pioneer · Ref. Pioneer Centre Seconds

Moser builds the escapement as an interchangeable assembly rather than as components seated individually in the plate. Through the display back it reads as a discrete unit rather than as parts distributed across the movement, which is a structural identifier that a generic movement cannot present. It also has a service consequence: the escapement can be exchanged as a unit, which is why Moser servicing is faster than the caliber's complexity would suggest.

Unlike the Khaki Field Mechanical, this reference has a display back. Expect an H-10 — an ETA C07.111 architecture with a full rotor, a Nivachron hairspring and a 21,600 vph beat. A visibly different bridge layout, or a rotor carrying generic decoration, settles the question without further work.

A skeletonised watch built around a specific movement architecture cannot conceal a substituted caliber, because the architecture is what the buyer is looking at. Compare the arrangement — barrel positions, train layout, balance position, bridge shapes — against the published caliber. Any generic movement placed behind this dial would be immediately visible as the wrong shape.

A micro-rotor sits within the movement's height, recessed into the plate rather than mounted above the bridges, so the movement looks like a manual-wind caliber with a small weight let into it. It is unmistakable once seen. A Polerouter opened to reveal a full rotor mounted above the bridges does not contain a Universal micro-rotor caliber, whatever the dial says — the commonest reason being a replacement movement fitted during a repair when the original was beyond economic service.

Where the dial supplies no identification, the movement supplies most of it — and Moser's movements are made to be looked at: hand-finished, with a distinctive bridge architecture and a modular escapement that lifts out as a unit. The display back is not a courtesy on this brand; it is where the identification lives.

A retrograde hand travels along an arc and returns to its start instantaneously at the end of its travel. Wait for the hour: the minute indication should snap back. A hand that travels backwards gradually, or that simply continues round, is not driven by a retrograde mechanism. Combined with the satellite indexing, this gives two independent functional tests on one watch.

The indicator reports the energy the automatic system has actually delivered over a recent interval, so it CHANGES with activity — it should read differently after an active period than after the watch has been still. A static indicator is a printed or non-functional imitation. This takes hours rather than seconds to check, and it is conclusive.

A conventional tourbillon carriage completes one revolution per minute. This one completes a revolution in twenty-four seconds, on an inclined axis. Timing it requires nothing but attention and settles whether the mechanism is what it claims to be. Combined with the visible inclination, it is a complete functional identification.

Watch it run. The inner carriage rotates quickly and is visibly tilted out of the dial plane; the outer carriage rotates slowly and carries the whole assembly with it. Two nested rotations at different rates, in different planes, is a mechanism — not an appearance — and a few seconds of observation distinguishes it from a decorative aperture or a single conventional tourbillon.

The 1982 JB200 used the France Ébauches FE 7121 quartz caliber. A vintage-presented JB200 with a mechanical automatic is inconsistent with the original; the AUTOMATIC movements (NH35 / Soprod) belong to the 2021+ re-editions.

The RW1212 is skeletonised at the dial and shown through the caseback. That gives an examiner two independent views of the same movement and leaves a substitution nowhere to hide. Compare the bridge layout, the balance position and the visible train against the published caliber — a generic movement behind a skeletonised dial will not match from either direction.

Set the watch a few minutes before the hour and wait. The hour hand should jump instantaneously across the dial to the next numeral in the true hour sequence, which is not the next numeral round the dial. A hand that creeps, or that advances to the physically adjacent numeral, is in a watch that does not have the mechanism. This is the most decisive and least technical check anywhere in the Franck Muller catalog, and it needs nothing but a few minutes.

Set the watch to just before the hour and observe. A genuine jumping hour changes instantaneously; a disc that creeps round over several minutes is a conventional hour hand behind an aperture. Then watch the minute sector reach sixty: it should snap back to zero. Together these are a functional test of the complication, which is far stronger evidence than any inspection of the dial, and they cost nothing but a few minutes' patience.

Over an hour, the active satellite carries its numeral along the minute track and then swings away as the next indexes into position. Two things have to be right: the tracking must be accurate — the numeral's position against the scale must actually read the correct minute throughout its travel — and the changeover must be clean and correctly timed. A copy that reproduces the carousel's appearance without the gearing will drift against the scale, index at the wrong moment, or simply rotate at a constant rate. An hour of observation settles it completely.

The Powermatic 80 beats at 21,600 vph, which gives the seconds hand six steps per second against the eight of a 4 Hz movement. The difference is visible to a practised eye and measurable by anyone with a timing app. A PRX Powermatic 80 sweeping at eight beats per second contains something else — most often a cheap automatic, occasionally a Chinese clone of a 2824. This is the single fastest check on the model and it requires no tools.

A true-beat seconds hand advances in discrete one-second jumps and holds still between them, unlike the six-to-eight steps a second of an ordinary mechanical watch. On the DSTB the mechanism producing that behaviour is visible on the dial side, so the hand's motion and its cause can be observed together. A stepping hand with no visible mechanism driving it — or a quartz movement, which also steps once a second — is the substitution to watch for, and the exposed mechanism is what distinguishes them.

A tourbillon carriage rotates, conventionally once a minute, carrying the balance and escapement with it. Cheap watches with a rotating disc in a dial aperture — and there are many — do not. The distinction is between a carriage carrying an oscillating balance around with it and a decorative element turning behind an opening, and a few seconds of observation separates them.
